Bienvenidos a Argentina!
Bienvenidos a Argentina!
We have made it to our second location on a small farm in central Argentina. We’ve been here one and a half weeks and we are loving it so far! There have already been a lot of differences than our previous location and a variety of unique areas to grow in.
After exploring the coast of Chile, eating some delicious seafood, and relaxing a lot, we made our way via bus and plane to Córdoba, Argentina. From there, we took another bus ride to a smaller town where our host picked us up to bring us to the farm. The sun was out and shining, 65° degrees, and we thought “We aren’t in Patagonia anymore…”
Our host is an ex monk that has spent 15 years traveling the planet, living in various countries, serving and teaching others. He has studied yoga and meditation in India, and still very much integrates these practices in his daily life. In just this short time, we have had many deep discussions on various topics about the world and spirituality. Our daily routine has included him making us breakfast, lunch, and dinner and share the meals and lots of conversation together. Before dinner, he sings us songs on his guitar with his spiritual mantra and we meditate together. Quite a different routine than what we had the last 2 months!
The farm is truly beautiful. It has a small river that runs through the property with large rocks to sit on and relax. It has three main houses, one for our host, one for the volunteers, and another guest house. Each one is made via bioconstruction which means it was made with local materials, such as mud or sand, wood, glass bottles, rocks, and bricks. There is a greenhouse and two other gardens with many plant beds. He grows many vegetables, including carrots, lettuce, herbs, and radishes, along with having many fruit trees. He also produces many medicinal herbs, such as lavender, rosemary, sage, and other plants native to this area that he turns into essential oils and other tinctures.
It has been amazing to see a location that is mostly “sustainable” as this is something we are curious about emulating in our future home/lives. The drinking water is taken from a drilled well on the property and the other water for showers, faucets, and plant watering is taken from the river. The electricity is solar powered, and is monitored for the right time to charge things based on the sun. Our host has made all of these homes himself (with help from family and friends) and slowly overtime added these features of clean water and electricity over the last 10 years. He is lacto- vegetarian, so we are only eating fruits, vegetables, grains, and some dairy products, such as milk, yogurt, and cheese. Our bodies have been a bit confused going from a mostly meat-based diet to plant based, but the food has been delicious.
Even though we are further north now, it is still winter down here in the southern hemisphere. We have been enjoying having a stove in our room, as the nights are slowly dropping into the high 20s. There has been some wind, but during the day the sun is typically out and it feels very warm. We feel very grateful for some of the “comfort” items we have here that we didn’t in Chile, such as heat, a shared bed, and more space in our room. We’ve been enjoying some meditation, yoga, and sharing mate together before we start our day. Overall, the jobs here have been very relaxed, and less physically demanding, consisting of gathering and cutting firewood, for winter, watering the plants, planting seedlings, feeding the cats, horses, and dogs, building the compost, and working on construction of a new meditation hall. We are soaking up the time given to rest and relax in nature and growing in other areas of our lives.
As the farm is quite rural, we do not have Wi-Fi here. We have some signal for data in specific parts of the farm. That being said, it will be much more difficult for me to post these, but I will continue to try my best. Also apologize for the typos - doing these posts now from my phone!
Connor and I miss and love all our friends and family! We are excited to share all that we learn here and continue to keep in touch as best we can! :)
Con amor,
Abby y Connor
