It's the Holiday Season

It's the Holiday Season

WOW! It’s December…how in the heck did that happen?! Connor and I were just reunited this week after our respective trainings and retreats. I completed my 200-hour yoga teacher training here in the Sacred Valley, Peru for 3 weeks, and Connor went to Argentina to complete a Vipassana meditation retreat for 10 days. Our first time separating in a long time, but a beautiful experience to each get time to progress our spiritual development and pursue our passions. It has been an eventful last couple months, but we are so so grateful for these opportunities and experiences.

My yoga training was jam packed with unique experiences! I wanted to understand more of the philosophy and theory behind yoga, more of it's roots and spiritual practice... And I definitely got that! The place that I chose was of the Hare Krishna religion and so there was a lot of time in the temple singing Kirtan and chanting mantras. Quite a unique and jarring experience coming from a background of the western religions. We learned the lineage of where yoga originated and then more specifically how the vinyasa yoga practice came to be. We practiced a lot of pranayama (breath work) and meditation. There were 6 of us total in the course so it was a really intimate and specialized experience. Most of the people were from South America so there was a lot of Spanish practice and immersion for the 3 weeks, which was great for me! We had a lot of beautiful ceremonies and excursions from doing a temazcal (sweat lodge), rose and cocao ceremony, bonfires, and seeing ruins in Cusco, etc. It was a very holistic experience with lots of focus on self-growth and awareness while also learning the technical practice of yoga and LOTS of Sanskrit words.

Connor attended a 10 day vipassana retreat which is a Buddhist meditation practice, mainly focused on observing the sensations in the body with a perspective of nonjudgement. The entire retreat was silent with a very heavy focus on meditation throughout the day with minimal other distractions. He really enjoyed his experience and time to turn inward and be with himself. Reach out to him for more details. ;)

Currently we are back at the place we were volunteering at before our retreats in Calca, the Sacred Valley. We plan to spend the holidays here with our foreign family. It is strange for it to be the summer season down here in the southern hemisphere. It really has not felt at all like the holiday season. But we are looking forward to seeing how the people and culture here celebrate. Probably lots of chicha and cuy (guinea pig).

We miss our families and friends lots! We hope everyone is having a great holiday season.
