From South to West!
From South to West!
We have arrived to EUROPE! Wow, still feels quite surreal…and the jet lag is upon us! We said our goodbyes to South and Central America (for now…) and after another 25 hour travel day, said hello to our next continent.
Over the last month, we left Ecuador and flew to Costa Rica to meet up with my family and some friends. It was a great reunion after a year to see some familiar faces and get some in-person hugs! We had a great place to stay right on the pacific coast, but also got to spend some time in the jungle. We saw sloths, monkeys, crocodiles, vipers, frogs, and LOTS of iguanas. We did some really cool excursions like hiking/swimming to a beautiful and powerful waterfall, zip lining over the water in a deep canyon, boat cruises, and a little surfing. Most of all, it was great to have time to reconnect and just be together.
Fast forward to current time - We arrived in Lisbon, Portugal about a week ago and have made our way north stopping along the way every couple of days. Quite a humbling experience to now be in a country where we really can’t communicate hardly at all with any locals. We stayed with a sweet English couple in the countryside and now are spending some time with a family friend in Porto. We saw some backpackers walking along the coast here and decided that we will walk the Porto to Santiago section of the Camino de Santiago starting tomorrow. It is roughly 150 miles and we get to stay in small hostels (albergues) along the way.
Let’s just say it has been quite the cultural shock stepping into Europe and being in the big cities coming from South America. Everything feels a bit more fast-paced and chaotic especially being on the move much more frequently. And oh yeah…the prices of things are just a LITTLE different here. We don’t have any volunteer stays lined up yet, but are hoping to use more of our time in Europe for visiting old friends and relatives as well as hiking a lot. Spain and Italy being the next big places to visit people. Let’s see how it goes, doing our best to stay open with what this part of the adventure brings us.
We are now about 8 hours ahead for the time change, but hope to still do our best to stay in contact!
Love you and miss you all!
